And we have new information!

New, hot, sizzling information from our very own – FSSAI.

Food Safety Standards Authority of India is quite known for one of the many things – their regular updates and improvisations have always kept Food Businesses and related Stakeholders on their toes.

So what was new from the House of FSSAI in these last 7 days? Take a Look!

1. In the new turn of events, the sale of Food items of all kinds will now need an FSSAI License on a mandatory basis. This includes raw materials, ingredients, food prepared in restaurants, etc.

This emphasized especially on the food business owners who may not directly be involved in processing and packaging, but those that supply raw materials and ingredients to them, or are involved in their sale and distribution.

2. Observing the consistent use of vegetable oil for repeated frying, FSSAI has issued a gazette notification with standards relating to Total Polar Compound (TPC) in cooking oil.

Oil

This new regulation shall be called as Food Safety and Standards (Licensing and Registration of Food Businesses) First Amendment Regulations, 2017 and will come into force from July 1, 2018. Total Polar Material Estimation is one of the widest and the most Internationally accepted method for determining the quality of the oil. Since the nutritional, chemical and sensory aspects of the edible oil deteriorate post repeated use, this notification is a welcome move from the organisation.

3. Ensuring the health of consumers, FSSAI in its long-due notification has finally issued the permissible antibiotics and veterinary drugs which are 37 and 67, respectively.

On a global level, the use of antibiotics and pharmacologically active drugs are prohibited in food products of animal origin, which includes fisheries and poultry. This notification called as Food Safety and Standards (Contaminants, Toxins and Residues) Regulations, 2011, is to make sure that antibiotics in food from animal sources do not lead to the development of antibiotic resistance in human pathogen, which is a threat to human health.

That’s all for this week folks!
