Very few government bodies have been as innovative and improvising as Food Safety Standards Authority of India (FSSAI). New notifications are making way into the Indian Food Industry every week and are highly responsible to make this paradigm shift in the safety and quality that we are experiencing! We bring to you these FSSAI Updates in your inbox to ensure you stay compliant at every step of your business growth.
Let’s understand what these FSSAI Updates are:
FSSAI Update 1: The notification issued on 18th September 2017 regarding the labelling requirements for Instant Noodles, states that the term ‘instant noodles’ have to be printed in place of ‘noodles’ before 30th June 2018.
This new notification, after receiving due comments and suggestions, has extended the date of the compliance period up to 30th June 2018. A time period of six months has been allotted to use the existing labels before complying with the new order.
FSSAI Update 2: A new notification regarding Cereals, Pulses and their related products like flour has entered the market. This emphasizes the nature of the grains, additives, moisture, and other ingredients.
This may be called as Food Safety and Standards (Food Products Standards and Food Additives) Amendment Regulations, 2017. The parameter ‘Aflatoxin’ is omitted, pulses and cereals are defined against which the new parameters are defined as well as the permissible amount of each parameter (like ash content, additives, ingredients, etc) is stated.
Different types of cereals like saga, wheat, millet, Jawar, Corn flakes and types like degermed, whole, roasted, dehulled, etc, are well stated in the new notification.
FSSAI Update 3: FSSAI will soon start surveillance of the food served in Food Quality in Hospitals and Medical Institutes, since people in these areas are more susceptible to diseases and/or are immunologically compromised.
After temples, FSSAI will venture into hospitals and healthcare facilities to ensure that the food provided to the people is of the utmost quality. The people visiting these places are either patients who are susceptible to diseases via food and water, or are kids and women who can contract these disorders if consumed unhygienic products.
Caterers or in-house food manufacturers need to comply with the latest notifications, have a valid FSSAI License, have a Food Safety Supervisor (FSS) trained under the FoSTaC Programme and also have a Food Safety Management System (FSMS) amongst other mandatory aspects in place.
FSSAI Update 4: Food Recall procedure has taken the food companies by surprise. This 10-step plan is now mandatory for license renewal and to comply with FSSAI.
Speaking about mandatory regulations, FSSAI has now made it imperative for all Food Business Operators to have a Food Recall process optimised. This ensures quick counteraction to any non-compliance later observed in the product released into the market. This is aimed to control the consumption of compromised food products as well as save the brand equity and conduct a streamlined, manageable recall.
While FSSAI Regulations and compliance notifications are essential to comply with, it is equally important to get your product tested, if and whether the food quality meets the International Standards in terms of safety.
