While we walk towards our work-place we do sense the ever-increasing air pollution problems PM 2. & PM 10 which make breathing a heavy task. Despite the presence of acute PM levels such as in the air, many industrial and corporate companies overlook the issues and don’t take the required steps.
One can’t see PM 2.5 and PM 10, of course. Just like you can’t see bacteria or viruses. But that doesn’t mean they aren’t there. These minute particles can pass from our lungs into our blood supply and be carried throughout our bodies. They may be invisible to the human eye but in sufficient quantities, they raise air pollution to intolerable levels.
Let us first understand what exactly pm 2.5 and pm 10 stands for :
PM 2.5 are particles which are 2.5 micrometers in diameter or smaller than that. These are the mixtures of solids and liquid droplets floating in the air which can easily enter the human bodies. It is usually around 3 percent of the diameter of a human hair and they are only detectable under a microscope.
They are a product of the combustion by the motor vehicles, power plants, forest fires, agricultural burning and some industrial processes. The particles are so small that it can penetrate deep into the respiratory track reaching the lungs.
Coarse dust particulate matter (PM 10), on the other hand, are less than 10 micrometers in diameter. These are 30 times smaller than the width of a hair and are small enough to get caught in the nose hair and into the upper airways of our lungs.
Effects Of PM 2.5 & PM 10
Along with serious illness with the cumulative exposure without wearing any sort of protection, there are other short-term effects too. Nose, throat and lung irritation, coughing, sneezing, runny nose and shortness of breath. Employees working in the corporates often contract heart diseases and are comparatively sensitive.
The fact is that the people living in cities with high concentrations of PM 2.5 and 10 are more likely to have more heart attacks, worst asthma, reduced lung function and die younger than others who breathe clean air.
PM 10 causes irritation to asthmatics and the elderly employees in the corporate. It irritates the eyes and causes dry throat.
In addition, PM 10 particles stay in the air for less duration, perhaps up to a couple of hours, while PM 2.5 particles can hover around for weeks claiming it to be more harmful than PM 10.
A growing awareness is observed by the dangers posed by PM 2.5 and PM 10. According to the survey of the World Health Organisation (WHO), it is assumed more people are affected worldwide than any other pollutant.
A Corporate Company has to be well aware of the air quality that is circulated on the premises. This can be done by undertaking frequent air quality tests by a NABL Accredited Lab which would provide accurate results. The IAQ tests should be done quarterly as three seasons run down the years and each season affects air quality differently. With these tests, the IAQ can be controlled by maintaining the HVAC system, monitoring the environmental hazard in the vicinity of the company.
On doing frequent quality checks in the organization, the employee well-being is assured. The absenteeism level by the employees go down and productivity increases. The chances of illness are likely to be reduced and hence work-efficiency. Also, the company goodwill is not at risk and it grows increasingly.
Thus, PM 2.5 and PM 10 should not be taken for granted and neglected by any Corporate Company as we can see it can cost them massively.
