With this latest finding of harmful ingredients in bread, it has become important that people are aware what could possibly be added to low quality breads.
Bread is the most commonly consumed breakfast or snacks product in our country. From school going children to youth and the elderly – people eat bread in large numbers.
However, there are other substances too that could be present in your bread, which are harmful.
We list out five harmful ingredients in bread that you should be aware of and watch out for :
1.Partially hydrogenated oil : These Trans-Fat substances are the worst kind of fat that anyone could consume!
2.Potassium Bromate : This is most often used as a dough conditioner, which
- Shortens dough rising times
- Increases shelf life, and
- Makes the dough easier for their machinery to process.
As mentioned earlier, use of Potassium Bromate and Iodate have become a major concern since these cause cancer. Europe, Canada, and many other countries have banned the use of this additive.
3.Azodicarbonamide – Also a popular food conditioner, it bleaches the flour used for baking bread, i.e., makes it whiter. Although considered safe in the US up to 45 parts per million (PPM), it is banned in Europe because recent studies showed it could cause asthma or allergic reactions.
4.DATEM – It is the acronym for Diacetyl Tartaric Acid Esters of Monoglycerides. It is used to improve volume and uniformity. A study conducted on rats showed that it caused heart muscle fibrosis and adrenal overgrowth.
5.Artificial colors – Yes, many bakers in India make White bread (made from Maida) brown by adding caramel to make it ‘Brown Bread’.
So the next time you’re out , make sure you check these harmful ingredients in bread in the label before buying it!
