FSSAI NEWS 1. FSSAI and Japans Health ministry will soon sign an MOU to co-operate food safety

mouThe Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI), India’s apex food safety regulator, and Japan’s Food Safety Commission, its Consumer Affairs Agency and its Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare inked a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to further cooperation between the agencies of the two nations in the area of food safety during Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent visit to Japan.

They inked two more Memorandums of Cooperation (MoCs) in the area of health and wellness. These are as follows:
-MoC between the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Republic of India, and the Office of Healthcare Policy, Cabinet Secretariat, Government of Japan and the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare of Japan to establish a mechanism to identify potential areas for collaboration between India and Japan in common domains of primary health care, prevention of non-communicable diseases, maternal and child health services, sanitation, hygiene, nutrition and elderly care

-MoC between the Ministry of AYUSH, Republic of India, and the Kanagawa Prefectural Government of Japan in the field of Healthcare and Wellness

FSSAI NEWS 2. The cleanest mega food parks and cold chain units are recognised by the Minister

Harsimrat Kaur Badal, minister of food processing industries, Government of India, distributed prizes for cleanliness to the mega food parks and cold chain units for maintaining, promoting and encouraging Swachhta culture on the penultimate day of the Ministry of Food Processing Industries’ (MoFPI) 15-day observance of cleanliness campaign, Swachhta Pakhwada, which concluded recently.

The first prize was awarded to Patanjali Food and Herbal Park (P) Ltd in Haridwar, Uttarakhand; the second prize to Satara Mega Food Park (P) Ltd, Satara District, Maharashtra, and the third prize to Pagro Frozen Foods Pvt (P) Ltd, a cold chain project in Fatehgarh Sahib, Punjab.

FSSAI  NEWS 3. Saffron sold in India adulterated as govt has no policy to check the quality

Quality of saffron in India has come under the scanner with a recent study pointing out that the commodity sold in India failed to meet any quality parameters of Grades-I and II, and about half the samples drawn for testing were adulterated.

The study, conducted by a team led by Gulab Khedkar, professor, molecular biology; director, Paul Hebert Centre for DNA Barcoding and Biodiversity Studies, Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Marathwada University, Aurangabad, questioned as to how a commodity that is premium and scarce in production, is widely used in the country.
