FSSAI News 1. FSSAI proposes a new role to the CEO of FSSA and brings out new amendments

Indian fruits and vegsFSSAI has stated a new amendment saying that the CEO of FSSA will be now exercising the powers of food safety commissioner for the Union of India (CoFSUI) for efficient implementation of the FSSA, 2006 and FSSR, 2011. Following are the amendments made :
– CoFSUI is obligated to conduct a training programme for food safety personnel and has the right to supervise for the efficiency of work.
– The export items will now be covered under the FSSA, 2006
-The CoFSUI can sanction prosecution of food business operators (FBOs) operating under the central licenses as well.
– The CEO can also prohibit the manufacture, storage, distribution or sale of any food article in the country in the interest of public health.

FSSAI News 2. FSSAI orders the referral laboratories to submit test reports within five working days

With respect to delay in providing the reports, FSSAI has introduced a deadline for the referral labs. The referral labs are directed to send their analysis reports within five working days after the receipt of the samples for chemical as well as microbiological testing and not more than 10 days in case of samples involving extended microbiological testing, like Clostridium spores in the case of canned foods. The order has been implemented with immediate effect.

Ashwin Bhadri, chief executive officer, Equinox Labs, said, “The initiative taken by FSSAI is a noteworthy one, and should have been implied much earlier with respect to the consequences suffered.”

“The time limit prescribed for laboratories will now ensure faster and accurate results. This will lead to immediate actions on receiving the reports by the concerned authorities and will facilitate spontaneous proceedings,” he added.

FSSAI News 3. FSSAI has issued approved methods of analysis of Cereal and Cereal products

In order to maintain the quality of cereals and the cereal products in the food industry, FSSAI has issued approved methods of analysis to test them. The food testing laboratories shall use these methods, with immediate effect.

“In addition to this, a part of the sample which will be sent to referral laboratories will give the final reports, thus cross-checking with the original results,” Bhadri stated.
